Advertising Rates

National rate: $10 per column-inch
All prices are net and non-commissionable.

University rate: Rice departments should contact the Thresher advertising manager about campus discounts.

Inserts: $150 per 1000 single-page inserts
Inserts are stand-alone, preprinted ads inserted inside the Thresher. Inserting a flyer into the Thresher is an excellent way to gain a high degree of visibility. Minimum number of inserts is 1000; maximum is 5500. Inserts must be ordered in increments of 500. Inserts that are more than a single page may cost more.

Insertion dates should be reserved at least two weeks in advance, and the inserts must be approved at least one week prior to publication. All inserts must conform to the same policies as other advertisements. Inserts must arrive at the offices of the Thresher printer at least one week before the date of publication. Contact the ads manager for shipping information.

<h2>Technical Requirements</h2>

Advertising space in the Thresher is sold in column inches (CIs). A column inch is a unit of area one column across and one inch high.

Any ad that is submitted too small or too large for its reserved space will be given and charged for the next larger size and is subject to a design fee. Ads that are 14 inches or longer will be given and charged for a full page length of 16 inches.

To determine the size of your ad in column inches, multiply the number of columns (across) by the (vertical) height in inches. A Thresher column is approximately two inches wide. For example, an ad that measures six inches in width (three columns) and 10 inches in height would be a 30-column-inch ad (3 columns x 10 inches).

To determine the cost, multiply the size of the ad in column inches by the price per column inch. A 30-column inch ad at $8.00 per column inch would cost $240.

The smallest display ad size is four column inches — either a two-column by two-inch horizontal ad (business-card size) or a one-column by four-inch vertical ad.
