Students referred to U. Court for underage drinking at public party

Rice Police referred eight students to Student Judicial Programs for Alcohol Policy violations at Brown College’s “Margaritaville” party Saturday. The students were then referred to University Court for adjudication.

None of the students, however, was issued minor in possession citations, Rice University Police Sergeant Gary Spears, who patrolled the party, said. Spears also said all the referrals were for underage drinking, and none was issued for serving alcohol to minors.

“We certainly didn’t see any problems with the way alcohol was being served,” Spears said. “We had an officer by the bar — that was me — and I didn’t see anything wrong going on there. I just saw a handful of students without wristbands holding beers. … I think the [alcohol servers] were doing a pretty decent job.”

Brown social Tommy Jackson said all the referrals were issued at the public party in the Brown Commons.

“Someone with a wristband would hand [a drink] off to someone without a wristband,” Jackson, a junior, said. “We checked for wristbands the whole night. … It’s just really hard to prevent someone without a wristband from getting a drink if someone is willing to give them one.”

RUPD Lieutenant Phillip Hassell said the number of citations is not out of the ordinary for a large public party.

“Eight is a little high, but not outrageously so,” Hassell said.
