Bald started as coordinator Jan. 17
Glynda Cumby worked as Hanszen College’s coordinator for 20 years until she retired this year, and Hanszen’s new coordinator, Joyce Bald, would like to stay that long — or longer.
Bald, who has been a Hanszen associate for two years, has worked as department coordinator for the French studies, classical studies and mechanical engineering departments. She began work Tuesday.
Search committee member Dominic Lee, a Hanszen senior, said Bald’s experience at Rice was an influential factor in her selection.
“We thought it was important that Joyce already knew the college system from working at Rice,” Lee said. “She also has outstanding office skills.”
Bald said she decided to become a college coordinator because she wanted the chance to interact with students outside of an academic setting.
“I’ve always had interest in working more closely with the colleges,” Bald said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the students and seeing their fun side.”
Hanszen senior Lauren Vanderlip, also a search committee member, said Bald will fit in well with Hanszen’s culture.
“I was so comfortable with her when I met her,” Vanderlip said. “What I loved about Joyce was that she was warm-spirited and welcoming.”
Hanszen Master Wes Morris said Bald connected with Hanszen students immediately, which he thinks will help her be an effective college coordinator.
“It’s a unique job,” Morris said. “The coordinator has to manage office routines and at the same time be a friend and counselor to 350 students.”
