Martel College forms committee to select new resident associate
Martel College has formed a resident associate search committee to name a replacement for Assistant Director of Forensics Jeremy Grace. The position will open July 1.
Dean of Undergraduates Robin Forman announced the opening in an all-departments listserv e-mail Jan. 26.
Committee co-Chair Abby Smith said about 17 people, including at least one graduate student, have already expressed interest in the position.
The committee plans to make a final decision by early April, Smith, a Martel senior, said. But before then, the committee will have to narrow the initial pool to conduct first-round interviews.
Candidates will be encouraged to spend time at Martel activities and meals to interact with students, Smith said.
The pool will again be narrowed before a second round of interviews is conducted.
Committee co-Chair Zach Averyt, a Martel junior, said the committee will look for someone who is dedicated to interacting with students.
“We’re looking for someone who already goes out of their way to get to know undergraduate students, not someone who’s just [applying to be an RA] to get a free place to live,” Averyt said. “We’re looking for a faculty or staff member who is eager to get to know students and makes that their priority.”
Smith said Martel is fortunate that it currently is the only college conducting an RA search because more people are likely to apply if they do not have to choose between colleges.
However, a challenge for the search will be finding an RA equal to Grace’s caliber, Smith said.
“The whole college really likes Jeremy Grace a lot, so it will be a little hard to find someone to fill his shoes,” Smith said.
Grace, who has served as one of Martel’s three RAs since Spring 2003, declined to comment.
The search committee will consist of three Martel freshman, four sophomores, two juniors and three seniors.
