News in Brief
Measles scare
Two Rice students developed measles over Labor Day weekend after coming in contact with a salesperson with the disease. Director of Health Services Mark Jenkins said the students have fully recovered, and the case is being investigated by Public Health Authorities of Houston. Jenkins would not comment further on the situation.
Although measles and rubella vaccinations are required to attend Rice, approximately 1 percent of those vaccinated do not develop the correct antibody response, Jenkins said. He said this likely accounts for the two measles cases. There have been no further suspected or confirmed cases at Rice, he said. In 2005, 66 cases of measles were reported in the U.S., and of these cases, 50 did not received vaccinations.

Wiess College Coordinator leaves
Lorie Zepeda resigned from her post as Wiess College Coordinator Sept. 12. Beth Rivera, who worked as a temp at Rice, will act as college coordinator until a replacement is found in October.
Zepeda was unavailable for comment.
Wiess senior Sarah Wulf is chairing the Wiess College Coordinator Search Committee, which will consist of students, Resident Associates and possibly a college coordinator from another residential college. The committee will consider internal candidates as well as applicants from outside Rice. Wiess Master Michael Gustin said they expect to find a new college coordinator by mid-to late October.
