Leebron’s salary, national presidential pay increases

President David Leebron’s salary increased by 9.2 percent from $550,000 in the 2004-‘05 fiscal year to $661,342 for 2005-‘06. This is less than half the salary of economics professor and former president Malcolm Gillis, who received a salary of $1,639,419 for 2005-‘06. $1.2 million of Gillis’ salary was deferred compensation, or money owed from his previous work, according to B.J. Almond, director of News and Media Relations.

In a survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education, released Nov. 16, Leebron’s total compensation, the combined total of salary and benefits, for 2005-‘06 is $778,167, up again from $713,594 in 2004-‘05. Gillis’s total compensation for 2005-‘06 is $1,673,889, nearly double his total compensation of $791,451 for the year 2004-‘05.

Almond said Leebron’s salary falls roughly in the middle of presidential salaries at peer universities. The Chronicle defines Rice’s peer group as private research universities with very high research activity.

The Board of Trustees’s Compensation Committee annually reviews the president’s performance and examines the past compensation of presidents of other elite research universities to determine Leebron’s salary each year.

John’s Hopkins University President William R. Brody is the highest paid president in Rice’s peer group, with a salary for 2005-‘06 of $1,790,364.

Former football coach Ken Hatfield, who retired Dec. 13, 2005, had the third-highest salary at the time. He received a salary of $495,312 for the 2005-‘06 fiscal year.
