President’s Study Break to offer pirate-themed food, activities
Eye-patches and gold coins will abound Sunday at the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed President’s study break in the Rice Memorial Center from 9-11 p.m. “Pirates of the Study Break” is hosted by the Offices of the President and the Dean of Undergraduates, and will give students a chance to nibble on free food and participate in various activities while taking a time off from studying.
The theme was selected by the President and Dean’s Study Break Planning Committee, which consists of two to three students as well as representatives from the businesses in the RMC, Student Association External Vice President Sarah Baker said.
At the study break, students can sign up for 10-minute massages in the chapel; walk the plank in Ray Courtyard; enter a raffle to get free textbooks next semester from the bookstore; decorate cookies in the Blair Conference Room; watch a talent show and a live broadcast of RTV5’s Top Cocktail in the Grand Hall; get fake tattoos in the Kelley Lounge and joust in the Farnsworth Pavilion.
Spontaneous Combustion and the Philharmonics will be performing at Willy’s Pub, where students will also be able to make their own ice cream sundaes. The Jolly Roger Design Competition, a flag-decorating contest, will be held in the Kelley Lounge. The prize has yet to be determined, but Baker said the committee was considering a DVD player or Pirates of the Caribbean DVDs.
The free refreshments will follow the seafaring theme, including seashell pasta primera with chicken alfredo and meat sauce, clam chowder and crackers, bagels and biscuits, coffee from Coffeehouse, smoothies from Smoothie King, cookies, Goldfish, blue Jell-O with Gummyfish, and Cap’n Crunch Cereal, along with bottled water and a variety of sodas.
The total budget for the study break is $10,000, with a total of $6,350 being spent on enough food to feed 750 people.
Martel College sophomore Rose Cahalan said she was amazed by the amount of free things at the President’s Study Breaks.
“It always makes me think about how Rice has so much disposable income and just wants to make us happy,” Cahalan said. “I’ll definitely stop by to sample the free food and pirate booty.”
