Camachos will be missed across campus
To the editor:
The shocking news that Dr. Camacho would not be returning this school year hit the Rice community just weeks before students were scheduled to return to “the hedges.” I, like many other Rice students and alumni, was surprised to hear of this drastic change in administration, especially on such short notice.
For many returning students who are still adjusting to the idea of a new president, the loss of Dr. Camacho on the administration team leaves us feeling as though we are returning to an unfamiliar campus.
Dr. Camacho was more than an administrator; he was the most prevalent symbol of Rice student life. He did more than fulfill a list of duties; he and his wife loved Rice, they lived Rice. The Camachos attended more activities than most students, regardless of financial or personal costs. They dedicated their lives to Rice students, and everyone here has been touched by their kindness in some way. It will be impossible to replace the care, honest concern and giving nature of Dr. Camacho and his wife.
As a new president leads us, this university will undoubtedly experience several changes, but as we recently discovered, things will change much sooner than anticipated. There’s no question about it — Rice is entering a new era.
Despite what may happen over the course of this school year, I am certain that Dr. and Mrs. Camacho will be missed and Rice simply won’t be the same without them.
