Parking fee increases necessary, fair
· Nobody likes a hit to the pocketbook, but the parking fee increases announced this week are necessary to a goal we support: the financial self-sufficiency of Rice's parking operations. (See story, page 1.) Currently the university loses about $600,000 per year on its parking system, and Rice assets that might be spent otherwise must instead cover that loss. So all students -- with and without cars -- are "paying" for the system, which is unfair.
