Maintain week's laudable volunteering
Rice did a spectacular job this week of rising to Hurricane Katrina's challenge. Despite our small student body, hundreds volunteered. (See Story, Page 1.) And Houston has been right in step. The city's diversity was amazingly apparent in the long lines of people waiting to help at the Astrodome. Lines were so long that some eager volunteers were turned away.

Restricted entry, tuition decisions make senseDespite some grumbling to the contrary, we think the Rice administration has been making smart decisions about letting students from New Orleans-area universities inside the hedges. It made two more smart decisions this week.
Anticipated 13th Street must meet expectations
We welcome the long-awaited 13th Street to Subway's old haunt in the Student Center. Some intriguing promises have been made about the new store, and we want to see those promises are kept.
