Restricted entry, tuition decisions make sense
Restricted entry, tuition decisions make senseDespite some grumbling to the contrary, we think the Rice administration has been making smart decisions about letting students from New Orleans-area universities inside the hedges. It made two more smart decisions this week.
Although we were pleased by the initial announcement that Houston-area college students from schools other than Tulane University would be considered for admission to Rice on a case-by-case basis, we understand the necessity of rescinding that policy. (See Story, Page 1.) Rice has small classes, a small faculty and relatively limited facilities compared to the University of Houston and other nearby schools. After being inundated by calls from non-Tulane students, it made sense to draw the line at only accepting students from Tulane.
Additionally, we applaud the decision to charge only Rice tuition to Tulane students who had not paid their Tulane tuition prior to Hurricane Katrina. The price break for these students — Rice’s tuition is about $7,000 cheaper than Tulane’s — constitutes another small way we will help out. And the money from these students will go to Tulane, not Rice, with which we are also pleased. It is safe to say Tulane needs the money more than we do right now.
