The RMC is not a strip mall
· The Rice Memorial Center is a gathering place for Rice students and staff. While dorm rooms and college commons are the usual leisure centers, the RMC is an oasis of relaxation in the middle of a stressful campus, especially for off-campus students, graduate students, faculty and staff.
Optimism about SA activity
· With Sammy's Picnic last night, the Student Association is making itself visible even before its first meeting of the year. But as much as we love free dinner, our student government should do more than feed us barbeque and pull PR stunts; its job is to effect change on campus in the interest of the undergraduate body. And, for the first time in recent institutional memory, we think this year's SA has the manpower and motivation to do just that. Which is why, when the SA kicks off its administrative year Monday at 10 p.m., we are really looking forward to going.
Get involved
· New students, welcome to Rice. This is a place of extraordinarily driven people, and it is a place you chose to call your own. So get driven: Today you will be assaulted by members of extracurricular organizations all afternoon in front of the Rice Memorial Center. Talk to them, and see if their interests match yours. Want to lobby for your state representative? Study for the prestigious Putnam math test? Juggle? Audition for musicals? Write or take pictures for Rice's student newspaper? Hint, hint. You can do any of these things, and because you are a Rice student now, you should. Do not plan to wait until sophomore year to get involved-- you will be way behind the ball.
