Get involved
New students, welcome to Rice. This is a place of extraordinarily driven people, and it is a place you chose to call your own. So get driven: Today you will be assaulted by members of extracurricular organizations all afternoon in front of the Rice Memorial Center. Talk to them, and see if their interests match yours. Want to lobby for your state representative? Study for the prestigious Putnam math test? Juggle? Audition for musicals? Write or take pictures for Rice’s student newspaper? Hint, hint. You can do any of these things, and because you are a Rice student now, you should. Do not plan to wait until sophomore year to get involved— you will be way behind the ball.
If nothing strikes your fancy at the activities fair, or if you already have an Orgo problem set due, at least take a couple hours from your Saturday to stop by the first home football game of the season (See football preview, Pages 11-13). You live at a Division I-A school now, and while our fans are not as numerous as the Longhorns’ or Buckeyes’, we have a passion for supporting our team — and unlike the Longhorns’ and Buckeyes’, our games are free entertainment.
No matter what your thing is, whether it’s the dancing with the South Asian Society or cheering for the football team or finding a professor to shadow for research, do it. No one is going to accept your short time here so far as an excuse not to participate.
