Optimism about SA activity
With Sammy’s Picnic last night, the Student Association is making itself visible even before its first meeting of the year. But as much as we love free dinner, our student government should do more than feed us barbeque and pull PR stunts; its job is to effect change on campus in the interest of the undergraduate body. And, for the first time in recent institutional memory, we think this year’s SA has the manpower and motivation to do just that. Which is why, when the SA kicks off its administrative year Monday at 10 p.m., we are really looking forward to going.
SA President Laura Kelley is actually doing things, and she’s doing them before she only has six weeks left in her term — in fact, she worked all summer to set up professional ties between the SA and the university’s upper-level administration. She has a useful and potentially effective executive committee— including returning Environmental Committee Chair Lauren Laustsen, whose efforts are already coming to fruition in a number of conservation and recycling programs, and our favorite SA parliamentarian, Chris Warrington.
So meet your senators and schmooze. But more importantly, go to the SA meeting Monday. If you’re a new student or have ignored the SA so far during your Rice career, show up at Farnsworth Pavilion at 9 p.m and catch a lecture about all the stuff the SA does. Because this year, it just might be more substantial than handing out yet more free T-shirts.
