Wiess edges Martel, Lovett in coed flag
Wiess (4-0) won two coed flag football games Sunday to secure the top spot in the Blue League, making one touchdown hold up in victories over Lovett (2-2) and Martel (3-1). Martel finished second in the division and will face Gray League champion and defending overall champion Jones (4-0) in the semifinals, while Wiess will play Gray runner-up Sid Richardson (3-1). In Sunday’s other game, Baker (1-3) edged Brown (0-4) 17-6 in a battle of previously winless teams.
Men’s Flag Football Martel (2-0) remained perfect in men’s flag football with its 25-6 victory over the GSA Saturday but must still face fellow unbeaten teams Jones (2-0) and Wiess (1-0), whose game against each other was postponed. Of Martel, Jones and Wiess, two will make the playoffs, as Baker (0-3) and GSA (1-3) have been eliminated.
Women’s Volleyball Defending champion Will Rice (2-0) has all but secured a volleyball playoff spot after defeating Lovett (0-1) Sunday. Hanszen (0-1) is ineligible for the playoffs after forfeiting to Martel (1-0) Feb. 24, while Brown (1-0) opened its season with a 25-10, 25-7 win over Baker (0-1). Sid Rich (1-0) beat GSA (0-2) in two sets Sunday.
Women’s Soccer Due to weather and forfeits, only one game was played over the weekend. Jones (3-1) defeated Baker (0-3) to secure second place in the Sunday League behind Hanszen (3-0), who still must play Sid but has clinched the league title based on its Jan. 30 win over Jones.
Men’s Soccer In the only game to survive weekend thunderstorms, Jones (2-1-1) romped to a 5-1 victory over Martel (0-4). Despite Jones’ win, Baker (2-0-2) finished second behind league champion Brown (3-0-1). Sid (3-0) has already secured a playoff spot in the Champions Division, and defending champion GSA (2-0-1) will advance to the playoffs unless it loses to Sid and Wiess (1-1-1) beats Hanszen (1-2) by enough goals to overcome its current five-goal deficit to GSA in goal differential.
Men’s Softball After all games were rained out Sunday, Sid (1-0) dominated Will Rice (0-1), winning 10-0 Tuesday, while GSA (1-0) opened its season with a win over Hanszen (0-1).
Women’s Softball Sunday’s full slate of Grapefruit League games were rained out, so the only softball games last week were Tuesday. In the Cactus League, Jones (1-3) lost to GSA in the first game of the night before falling 5-4 to Will Rice (4-0) in the nightcap. Will Rice has clinched a playoff spot by virtue of its wins over GSA (3-1) and Wiess (2-2), which won its game Tuesday when Martel forfeited.
Floor Hockey In the opening week of Wales Conference floor hockey action, Hanszen forfeited to Baker Tuesday, and defending champion GSA beat Lovett 3-0. Jones dominated Will Rice 4-0 Wednesday, while Brown (1-1-1) tied Wiess (0-1-1) 3-3 in its first game before losing to Martel (2-0) 5-3.
