Golf finishes 13th at Lafayette Classics
The golf team recorded its first non-top-10 finish of the season last weekend, finishing 13th among 15 teams at the Louisiana Classics Intercollegiate March 7-8 at Oakburn Country Club in Lafayette, La. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to rain, and the Owls shot a 31-over 607, 25 strokes behind first-place Southern Methodist University.
Freshman Jeff Krakowiak led Rice with his third top-20 finish of the season, tying for 18th with a 4-over 148. Junior Parker LaBarge, whose 7-over 151 was good enough to tie for 38th, was the only other Owl to place in the top 40, but Rice’s other three competitors, seniors Frank Buttacavoli, Matt Toohey and Eddie Rowe, all finished within seven strokes of LaBarge. Buttacavoli and Toohey both shot 10-over for the two rounds. The Owls will return to action today at the Hall of Fame Invitational at the Redstone Golf Club, which continues through Sunday.

Solares, Magness fall short of NCAAs
Sophomores Pablo Solares and Stephen Magness recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times at the University of Washington Last Chance Qualifier in Seattle, Wash. March 5, but neither’s time was good enough to secure a spot at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark. Magness and Solares finished sixth and seventh in the mile, respectively. Magness ran the race in 4 minutes, 3.34 seconds —1.28 seconds better than Solares’ time — but his time was 2.08 seconds slower than the last provisional qualifier to advance to the field of 15 runners at the NCAA Championships.
Magness and Solares will join the rest of the Owls at the TSU Relays, which begin today and continue through Sunday at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium. Former Rice All-American Ryan Harlan (Hanszen ‘04), currently a volunteer assistant coach, won his first U.S. national title, taking the gold medal in the heptathlon at the USA Indoor Combined Events Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. March 6.

Jimoh left out of national indoor meet
Junior Funmi Jimoh’s individual success at a last-chance meet did not translate into a NCAA bid, as her provisional qualifying mark in the long jump was not enough to advance to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Jimoh and three other Owls competed at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. March 5 in an attempt to earn a place at the national meet.
Jimoh finished in fifth place, long jumping 20 feet, 1.5 inches. Senior Yvonne Umeh’s 200-meter time of 23.99 seconds was a career best, junior Nina Mayes finished fourth in the 60 in 7.51 and sophomore Kate Gorry placed sixth in the 5,000. Rice begins the outdoor season today when it hosts the TSU Relays, which continue through Sunday, at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.

Ros, Massengale fare well in College Station
Senior Urska Ros and freshman Brittany Massengale both placed highly at the USA Swimming Regional Championships, held March 5-6 in College Station. Ros finished the 100-meter butterfly in 56.08 seconds — good for third place among 123 entrants — and the 200 freestyle in a 12th-place 1:53.51. She also swam the opening leg for an 800 freestyle relay team that took fourth place with a time of 7:38.30. Freshman Brittany Massengale placed 18th out of 59 competitors in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:31.91.
Ros’ provisional qualifying school-record time of 2:00.11 in the 200 freestyle at the Western Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 26 earned her a spot at NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 18-19 in West Lafayette, Ind. Because she qualified in that event, she is eligible to compete in any other event in which she has a provisional qualifying time. Ros will take advantage of that rule and swim in the 100 butterfly, the event in which she recorded the second-lowest time in school history, 54.97 seconds, at the WAC Championships.
