Halsey, Owls top Cougars in Austin

The swim team opened its season with a pair of solid victories: the first conventional, the second more unorthodox.

First, Rice continued its domination of crosstown rival UH with a 67-44 dual-meet win Friday in Austin, despite conceding the points in the diving events, in which the Owls had no competitors.

Sophomore Amy Halsey came on strong early, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of two minutes, 7.39 seconds, and the 200-yard backstroke. For her performance, Halsey was named the first C-USA swimmer of the week for the 2005-‘06 season.

“Our returning swimmers did pretty much as I expected, if not better,” head coach Seth Huston said. “Amy really stepped up and swam great.”

Freshman Carlyann Voss Miller led the newcomers with victories in the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle. Freshman sprinter Diane Gu, who ranked second among U.S. high school seniors in the 50 freestyle last year, had a strong showing in the event, winning with a time of 23.83. Gu and Miller teamed with senior Laura Healey and sophomore Carey Hain to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.55.

Then Rice participated in the more unusual Lake Travis Relays Saturday, an open-water race covering about 12 miles. The Owls’ “A” team — composed of freshman Caitlin Warner, Hain, Halsey, sophomore Jennifer Hill, junior Andrea Hurn and senior Meg Brown — finished first in the 24-team field, winning by just 31 seconds.

Huston, who also swam in the race, said the team faced tough competition, including swimmers no longer in college.

“The relay swim was just something we wanted [to do] to get the team to compete in a different environment,” Huston said. “It ended up that our ‘A’ relay team had quite a race on their hands — almost four hours of swimming and they only won by 31 seconds.”

Rice will host regional rival North Texas Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Rice Pool.
