Women’s tennis drops meet to Baylor

In their first dual match of the 2007 season, the women’s tennis team did not fare well against Baylor University, falling 7-0. The Bears, ranked 6th in the nation, stomped the 64th-ranked Owls, winning all but one of the matches in commanding fashion.

Junior Tiffany Lee and freshman Julie Chao contributed to Rice’s lone victory of the match, as they were able to defeat Baylor’s Iva Mihaylova and Klara Zrustova 8-3 in the No.1 doubles match. However, since two doubles victories are needed to score a point, the Bears were able to shut Rice out. Sophomore Dominique Karas and freshman Rebecca Lin couldn’t hold off 37th-ranked Lenka Broosova and 38th-ranked Jessica Zok, losing 8-6. In the final doubles match, the tandem of sophomore Emily Braid and junior Christine Dao fell to Baylor’s 21st-ranked Zuzana Zemenova and Jana Bielikova.

Already down in the match, the Owls were unable to win a set, let alone a match, in singles against the Bears. Baylor swept all six singles matches, clinching its first dual match victory of the 2007 season.

Rice will have three opportunities to earn its first victory of the spring season next weekend at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Owls play Sam Houston State Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi that afternoon at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Owls will face Texas State at 2 p.m.
