Women's track successful at Bayou Classic, Texas Relays
· At least one Rice student spent last week's spring recess in the sunny Caribbean, but she was doing anything but relaxing. Competing Saturday at the Caribbean Free Trade Association Games at Turks and Caicos -- a group of islands south of the Bahamas -- freshman Shakera Reece set a new Rice record in the 100-meter dash. Reece, who was named Conference USA Newcomer of the Year for her performance during the indoor season, posted an 11.34 second time, a tenth of a second faster than Rice's previous record of 11.44 set by TaNisha Mills (Jones '97) in 1996, and the fastest time by a freshman in the country so far this year.
Men's tennis closes out season at home
· If their recent play at home is any indication, the men's tennis team should have no trouble in next weekend's Conference USA Championship tournament. For the fifth time in seven tries, Rice dominated a home dual match, crushing Abilene Christian University 5-1 last Tuesday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The road, however, continues to bedevil the Owls: They fell to 6-6 as the visiting team, dropping last Saturday's match at the University of Tulsa 4-3.
