Football drops close shootouts
· Some say that close losses hurt a team far worse than blowouts. If that is the case, the football team's last two games stung far worse than their non-conference defeats. With their 56-48 loss to the University of Houston two weeks ago and a 38-35 defeat at the hands of the University of Memphis last Saturday, the Owls' hopes for a second-straight bowl berth are now in serious jeopardy. The Owls must now win all of their remaining games just to qualify for a bowl game, and even that is no guarantee.
Women's cross heads to C-USA title meet as favorites
· Coming off their stunning victory at the Notre Dame Invitational, the women's cross country team once again took control at a major national invitational, finishing seventh at the Pre-Nationals Meet on Oct. 13 in Terre Haute, Ind. The Owls competed against 38 other teams, including 11 ranked squads, in the six-kilometer race.
Soccer suffers first loss in conference play
· The soccer team steamrolled into last Sunday's matchup at East Carolina University without a loss in Conference USA play. But, thanks to some timely defense, the Pirates saw to it that Rice did not leave town unscathed, taking the match 1-0. With the loss, the Owls (9-4-2, 3-1-1 Conference USA) finished their weekend road swing 1-1, having handily defeated Marshall University 3-1 the previous Friday.
